Papers, 1862-1885.

The collection contains three letters written by Kimball. The first (4-20-1862) is to Adjutant General Laz Noble asking for regimental vacancies to be filled. The second (2-9-1869) is from Noble as state treasurer and regards a visit by General Rosencrans to Indianapolis. The third (5-12-1885) is written from Ogden, Utah describing his Civil War service, 1863-1865, including serving under Grant at Vicksburg, then being sent to Arkansas.

Kimball, Nathan, 1823?-1898

A native of Washington County, Ind., Kimball served with Indiana regiments during the Mexican and Civil Wars, gaining the rank of major general. He was state treasurer from 1867 to 1871, and served in the Indiana General Assembly in 1873. In 1874 he moved to Utah and served as U.S. Surveyor and later postmaster of Ogden.
